Plus: Greatest Running Music Tracks of Matt's Time
2

Eugene and Matt talk 100 miles. The where, what, and why.  Dirt Church Radio 291.

Kia Ora e te whānau!

This week on the pod, Eugene and Matt settle in for a good old chat about Matt’s upcoming 100 mile event and Matt gets the opportunity to chat to one of his running idols (Eugene, and yes, we are leaving that in) about his process and engagement with the distance.

Following on from last week’s AidStation when we spoke to coach Kerry and Ali from SQUADRUN, we discuss the where, the what, and most importantly the why around an event that has bludgeoned itself into the running discourse and is more popular than ever.

Enjoy!

Our mates at Squadrun have come up with a special four week training trial for listeners of DCR. Now as you’ll know from listening to DCR over the years, Squadrun is the baby of Kerry Suter and Ali Pottinger, and they have coached thousands of runners to success at a bunch of events we love and cherish and if you’ve been to any trail races on either side of the Tasman you’ll have seen the squadrun colours being represented strongly. So, if you want to give it a crack, here’s the link.

Your Band Might Be My Life – Some Records That Shaped A Life Spent Running

– Matt

I remember vividly the first music I consciously heard. I remember where I was, what I was wearing (brown corduroy dungarees) and the colour of the 7” record label. That record was Walking On The Moon by The Police. I was three.  Ever since then I’ve been utterly and completely obsessed by music, and it took over my life almost completely in my late teens to early thirties.

When I started running, music became a twin obsession, and over the years some of the best experiences I’ve had (and the worst, to be honest) have been soundtracked to music. Beyond the recollection of physical effort are the feelings that these records engendered, and where I was when these experiences took place. I’ve been thinking a lot about my relationship to both running and music lately, so here’s some records that shaped a life spent running.
