Not Running Sucks

An ode to running, plus a guest chat about Camille Herron's mind-boggling record (and the Kiwi she claimed it off)

AidStation 005 - What We Think About When We Think About Not Running*

Most often what we talk about with our running friends when we are not running is running. When we are running with others we most often talk about non-running related matters (and running), and when we are running, or more importantly, CAN run, we think about … running.

What happens when you can’t run for a prolonged period of time? What do you think about, apart from the desire to hit the trails? And what, when it comes to it, does running REALLY mean to you? And does this meaning change when you can’t do it?

On this episode of our paid-subscriber-only AidStation podcast, we discuss these thorny topics and marvel at Camille Herron’s earth shattering week at the lululemon Further event, joined by guest Suzanne McFadden, founding editor of LockerRoom, who caught up with Sandy Barwick, the Kiwi legend who previously had the record..

You can read Suzanne’s interview with Sandy Barwick here.

Not Running Sucks

– Eugene

There’s a longing deep within me. Sometimes it’s painful. Like grit in my sock.

Sometimes it’s an emptiness. Like a losing team’s changing room. Sometimes it’s hot. Like a haystack on the brink of combusting.

Yes, I’m finding it hard to explain. As my tortured similes attest.

Because what I’m missing out on is something I should have been grateful for, but which I’ve taken for granted. For five weeks now, I haven’t run a step.

It’s the longest stretch of time I haven’t run for about 25 years. And I’m lost.

But it’s just impossible to articulate.

Running is just … part of me. Running is just … so intrinsic to my life.

Running is just …

Gah.

It’s not something I do. It’s more than that.
