Getting by with a little help from your friends

Lessons from an ultramarathon (after a dong on the head)

The 2024 WUU2K Special: Leaving it all out on the trail.  Dirt Church Radio 285

In its nine-year history the WUU2K has kicked many a runner in the ass. This year it kicked Matt in the head.

Antecedently to the unfolding malarky, Eugene and Matt caught up with NZ trail legend Jenny Hirst for gear check, WUU2K race director and founder Gareth Thomas, and long-time collaborator Brent Robinson.

You’ll get all the action from the start line, and Matt out on course, alongside Eugene’s interviews with Tailwind NZ’s Mark Drew,  Carly Webber from Runners NZ and many more.

Enjoy!

Music by Andrew McDowall, Digicake

Our mates at Squadrun have come up with a special four week training trial for listeners of DCR. Now as you’ll know from listening to DCR over the years, Squadrun is the baby of Kerry Suter and Ali Pottinger, and they have coached thousands of runners to success at a bunch of events we love and cherish and if you’ve been to any trail races on either side of the Tasman you’ll have seen the squadrun colours being represented strongly. So, if you want to give it a crack, here’s the link.

I Get By With A Lot Of Help From My Friends

– Matt

I hit my head really hard on the weekend whilst running the WUU2k.

I’ve started this essay four times with decreasing levels of elegance.

It’s Monday.

My brain literally hurts.

I feel dizzy and sick.

I was supposed to start a new job today, and I can't.
